♦_. HOUSE OP REPRESENTATIVES. Wednesday, August 14. The Speaker took the chair at 2.80 p.m. The Premier objeoted to the motion, given notice of by Capt. Russell that -when the Tariff Bill came down he would move, viz., "That the Colonial Treasurer be requested to withdraw the proposed alterations of the dutieß of Customs, on the grounds that by them no simplification of the tariff is effected ; that few of the existing anomalies are abolished ; no appreciable relief is granted to anybody, while extra burdens are imposed upon many; and the estimated increase of revenue (namely, £10,800) is not tomtaenguratt with (be general dii-

To have time for consideration the Premier moved the adjournment to 7.30, aa Sir Robert Stout afterwards sarcastically put it, to enable the Government party to hold a caucus and discuss their position. The adjournment to 7.80 was agreed to t abd oh resuming Mr Ward said he intended to moVe, at . the proper time, as amendments to tha tariff proposals, That in lieu of tha duty imposed by a resolution of this House of the 80th July, 1895, on flannelettes, flannelette shirtings, imitation flannels, raised cotton and ■oft spun piece goods there shall be levied, collected and naid to and for the use of Her Majesty upon the ■aid goods, excepting flaanelette shirtings, en and after the 15th day ' of August one thousand eight huhdred and ninety five a duty of ten per cent ad valorem ; that the duty on flannelette shirtings imposed by the said resolutions shall cease and determine from the 15th day of August, 1895 ; that any duty paid from and after the 81st July, 1896, in excess of that now imposed shall be refunded." The motion that the House go into Committee of Ways and Means was agreed to. The financial debate was then resumed. The House rose at 0 20 a.m. Thursday, AvausT 15. The Speaker took the chair at 2.80 p.m. The whole day was taken up with the debate on the Financial State* ment. __________
