Police Court.

(Before E. S. Thynne and T. P. Williams, Eaqrs., J'sP.) W H. Howe was charge by the police on three charges : While drunk was guilty of riotous or disorderly behaviour in a public place at Shannon on 27th July ; while drunk and disorderly did refuse or fail to quit the licensed premises of Archibald Keith of Shannon, publican, on 27th July ; using insulting words or beha\io«r in a public place vi Shannon ou the 27ih July ; Cononauio Giuespiis prosecuted and Mr Moore appeared for the defendant who pleaded " Not Guilty." Constable Gillespie said the charges were laid under sec. 8, subsection 29, and sec. 20 of the Police Offences Act and sees. 152, 153 of The Licensing Act. Archibald Keith, John Keith, M. Murphy, A. Blair, and the constable deposed to the defendant's conduct. Mr Moore called the defendant for the defence who denied most strongly the truth of the evidence given, but pressed on cross-examina-tion of the constable, generally substantiated it. It having been agreed to take all the cases at once, the Bench considered their decision and found W. H. Howe guilty on all the charges and inflicted a fine of £1 and costs 23s on the first charge ; £3 and the costs 7s, and witnesses expenses, £5, on the second charge ; and £1 and costs 12s on the third charge. Oa the application of Mr Moore 14 day9 were allowed for payment. William Knapp was charge with using insulting word 3or behaviour in a public palce in Foxton on Saturday last. Accused pleaded guilty and was fined 5? and casts Is. Allowed a week to pay fine in. The police applied for a prohibition order against William Hutchison, who did not appear. The Order was granted to apply all the licensed houses in Foxton and Shannon. Herman Neilson was charged with drunkenness. Accused pleaded guilty and was fined 103 and costs 7s. The police applied for a prohibition order against Herman Neilson, but a 9 he strongly objected to the order being made and it did not appear that he had been brought before the court on a charge of drunkenness for a year past, the Order was refused.
