Sohool Committee.
The -adjourned meeting from Tuesday, of the Foxton School Committee 'was held on Thursday afternoon- at Mr Rhodes office, owing to the absence of Mr Ray. Present — Messrs Thynne (chairman), Little, Rhodes and Stansell.
The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.
Tha. Chairman explained that the meeting was held to consider the applications sent by the Education Boarc^ for the post of Assistant Mistress, He regretted all the members were not in attendance though i«*they were all acquainted with the fact that the meeting was to beiield, Messrs Westwood and Walsh having been reminded of it in the morning, and Mr Ray had given the members notice of it. If the case was not one of urgency a postponement might have been made, but 8-s any new teacher would probably nave to give her committee the usual month's notice, and as Mrs Hellish would be leaving the school ,____Jth£__end of the month, there was nothing to be done but to act promptly, The Board had sent fi?o-^Maplieations, all from ladies, whose ranged from EBto E 6. Alter reading lhe applications and discussing the same, Mr Stansell proposed and Mr Rhodes seconded, That Miss O'Brien be appointed Assistant-Mistress in the nlace of Mrs Hellish. Carried unanimously. The fact of Mrs Mellish having resigned her position in the Foxton School was mentioned and, Mr Thynne proposed and Mr Little seconded, That Mrs Mellish's resignation be received with regret, and that she be thanked for the attention she has given to her duties as Assistant-Mistress of the Foxton School. Carried unanimously. No other business was possible owing to the absence of Mr Ray, the hon. Clerk. The Committee therefore adjourned. Miss Lucy O'Brien, the young lady just appointed Assistant-Mistress of the Foxton School, holds the degree of E 8. She has been engaged for the past seven years in teaching under the Wanganui Education Board. For 4 years in Palmerston as a pupil teacher under Mr F. E. Watson, who reports " during that time she has given me every satisfaction " ; and for the last three years she has been an assistant teacher in the Campbelltown school. For the past 4 years Miss O'Brien has obtained 100 per cent oi passes, twice in S. II and twice in S. I. Previously her average in S. 11l was 86 per cent. The Inspector in his four last reports stated her classes were excellently prepared. Prior to entering the Board's service, Miss O'Brien attended tha Girls High School Wellington for rather more than a year, having previously obtained a Board Scholarship. Miss j Hamilton, the Principal says " She has excellent abilities and is a thoroughly well-disposed girl. She has an especially good knowledge of arithmetic."
