Sir Michael Hicks- Beach, Chancellor of the Exchequer, in an election speech, said the Government must have a big majority to silence the cacklings of the Radicals. To come back from the country with a majority of 20 or 30 would be of no service. Mr Chamberlain stated in a speech thit he would support the Canadian movement for Freetrade with Great Britain. The following appointments in the Ministry are officially announced : —
Mr A. Akers Douglas, Commissioner of Works and Public Buildings, with a seat in the Cabinet.
Mr W. H. Long, President of the Board of Agriculture, with a seat in the Cabinet.
Mrr Gerald Balfour, brother of Mr A. J. Balfour, Under- Secretary for Ireland.
The Duke of Norfolk, PostmasterGeneral.
Sir John E. Gorsfe, Vice-President of the Council of Education.
Colonel Sir W. H, Walrond, Patronage Secretary to the Treasury.
Mr Wm. G. Ellison -Macartney, Secretary to the Admiralty.
Mr Austen Chamberlain, eldest son of Mr Joseph Chamberlain, Civil Lord of the Admiralty.
Mr Jesse Coliings.Under-Secretary for the Home Department.
Lord Selborne, Under- Secretary for the Colonies.
Mr T. W. Russell, Parliamentary Secretary for the Local Government Board.
Mr Joseph Powell Williams, Secretary for the War Office. In the House of Commons Sir H. Carapellßannerman admitted that the Adjutant-General had reported that the supply of ammunition was sufficient, though not ample.
Mr Chamberlain said the Govern, menfc intended to remedy the defi* ciency.
At the wool sales 14,669 bales were offered, chiefly from New South Wales and Queensland.
There was an unusually large attendance of buyers, and competi tion was keen. Americana and English were the chief buyer*.
Medium and good merinos and cross-breds were 10 per cent., and taulty sorts 5 per cent, above the May closing rates.
Mr Gladstone's manifesto in taking farewell of the Midlothian electors was colourless.
The Stock Exchange has decided to quott New Zealand 3 per cants.
