Arbor Day.
We are requested to draw attention to the fact that the Government has fixed Wednesday the 7th August for Arbor Day. To facilitate any movement the Government has issued a pamphlet giving practical suggestions on tree planting, suggestions as to a progftonme, and a catalogue of trees and Bhrubs suitable for planting. No one is a greater advocate of planting than ourselves, but in this district we have anticipated the Government by many years and did ur planting* before it was con-
sidered altogether the "correct thing," so that we hardly know what portions of our territories now need being further beautified. Our school ground is filled with too many trees, our cemetery is also fully stocked with trees, our recreation grounds attd our racecourse have also been planted for many years. Unless the Itreets are planted we ktiow of to where else, except the Church ground on the Moutoa road belonging to the Roman Catholics. However the Borough Council meets on Monday when the subject will doubtless be discussed. In the programme sketched it provides for the children marching to work headed by a brass band. Unfortunately we have no band. It also provides for the Mayor, and other prominent colonists and Councillors making appropriate addresses. This fortunately can be done, and would doubtless be of great interest, especially if they read up and compared, as suggested, the present conditions of countries that have despoiled their forests with their former prosperity — Palestine, Persia, and Colorado. Everything depends upon how the projeot is taken up and managed by our prominent public men, their decision on Monday night will be watched with Interest.
