Slavery in Africa Under British Rule.
« In 1890 the islands of Pembia and Zanzibar came under the direct control of Her Majesty's Government. According to Mr Joseph A. Pease, M.P., there are a great many slaves on these islands and they are badly treated. Her Majesty's ships of war are copied at Zanzibar entirely by slave labour, women and girls doing the most of the work ! It is true they receive wages, but these go to their masters ! It is well known, says Mr Pease, that the majority and the more highly valued of the slaves sold at the coast are obtained by raids among the native tribes in Nyasaland — an English Protectorate. These raids are variously estimated as sweeping annually from 800,000 to 500,000 negroes away, only ten per cent of whom reach the coast, the rest dying of cruel treatment by the way.
