Mukaka River Board.
The adjourned meeting of the above Board was held at the Library Buildings on Tuesday morning at 10
a.m.
Present — Messrs Gardner (chair« man), Wilson, Carter, Nye and
Gower.
Proposed by G. Nye, seconded by B. Gower, That the Foxton Bdrough Council be asked to grant the Mukalia River Board the use of the library room for their Board's meetings for the nominal rental of five pounds per year. Carried. Proposed by G. Nye, seconded by S. Carter, That the clerk be instructed to obtain a minute book, cash book, ledger and other necessary stationery, and a copy of the River Board's Acts and Public Jgjrks Acts. Carried. " '^*"
Proposed by G. Nye, seconded by B. Gower, That the clerk be directed to obtain from the Property Tax Commissioner an Assessment 801l of the valuation made under "The Property Assessment Act, 1878,^ of all properties within the Mount Robinson Survey District for the use of the Mukaka River Board under section 90 of the River Board's Act.
Carried.
Mr Wilson then stated his intention of resigning. «^m Mr Gardner felt he could not let Mr Wilson leave without s&ying something. All along he recognised the great good Mr Wilssn bad done in originating the embankment) of the river. In any ordinary floods the farms had been saved. In going over the works yesterday he was assured that Mr Wilson ha^neferteen given sufficient credit fpfe wha^jftfcd been done, as he must fca?e-gT?e% much time, trouble and anxious work. He desired on behalf of r Jhe Board to accord Mr Wilson 1 , the Board's heartiest thanks. .? ■ Mr Carter secondod the mofton, which was carried with applause. .
Mr Wilson said the resolution gave him great satisfaction. He Ibj& jot up the Board as a matter of jWly. He was pleased they were safeped with what he had done. The JSJjka had been designed for gene^rwt tection, not for extraordinary i^ii|». The estate laid eight feet below ordinary level, and it was found Afrat small floods easily swamped the land. The works done, showed last winter, that they were sufficient to protect the land. The object, except without great expense, was to protect the land from ordinary flood vitoH? beyond it it was not thought worth attempting.
