Death of Mr William Langley.
At an early hour this morniag death claimed an old colonist in th« person of Mr William Langley. 'It appears that on Saturday he ftaftgjbV a cold, which developed only-^!»¥<ra symptoms on Monday. The deceased passed calmly away. ul' -^ Mr and Mrs Langley arrf^chin^ Wellington in the year 186%an&lW^ some time Mr Langley had eharg»tif^« the Lowry Bay estate. It wat $4.. N 1866 that the family removed to-thfr^.; Wharangi, at the mouth of the v Ma« ';-■ nawatu, where they kept a hotel and the ferry. In the old eoaohlng days, the Wellington and Wanganui coaches used to stop the nignlnat Langley 's and the house was thtts frequently crowded, and thftiifew. ; settlers then inland, used to ride down of an evening to geka little converse with the outside world. : • Mr Langley has been instrumental in saving life on the beach j aB in the early days cargo carrying iwas 'tit** by small 25-ton cutters and bthefc like craft, which the boisterous weather at times wrecked. r.? 1 ; i When the Wharangi house waa abandoned, and now its site is in th,e v bed of the river, Mr Langley movetf • to a property he held in the town, and has ever since remained upon it. He was a most active and healthy man for his age (75), and we do nofe remember his having had a serious illness prior to this fatal one. Even this he looked upon, almost to the last, as only a bad cold, and objected .• to any fuss being made or a doctor ■■ called in. Mr Hamer, the chemist, gave him some physio to ease him during the last few days, but that was apparently against the deoeased's wish. Mr Langley leaves a widow and a -. grown-up family of three sons and. . one daughter, . who is married to a settler in Carapbeilfcown. ' . The deceased was an old Mason and was one of the founders of tha Foxton Lodge No. 727. This iiaf become defunct and thus- the faneifal r will be deprived of the usual imposing features attached to that of '•,. Mason. . The funeral is arranged for Sunday. Personally we have known the late William Langley for close upon 28 years and have always known him for a good citizen and a civil and obliging neighbour. His death marks the rate we are travelling towards the bourne we know not of. To his widow and family we offer our sincere sympathy.
