(fsom our own cobbespondent.) Kererii catl ndw boast df a saifr* mill which, lias been erected a fsW chains north 01 the railway statioii on that land leased from theMaorife'B; Some tramways are already laid* •end cottages are being erected aftefc tlie iistial style of residence arbntofl timber mills. It is reported that tlie owhers hive several large orders Raiting execution, which will gits them a fair start. , . , Most oi the fires aboui; here fcroVea good ones, and many labourers may be seen returning daily, whose appearance shows plainly that they have been employed in the enviable pastime of sowing seed among black logs. The portion of land leased from the Maories by Messrs Baldwin and Sons., presents a very different appearance from that which it did twelve month9 ago. In place of the beautiful native bush so much admired by our visitors from abroad, it . is now becoming a welcome sight to would-be settlers, being well burned . and fenced, with the green blades just showing above the dark surface. This land is all beautifully undulated and has a creek winding through; it which would gladden the hearts of many, who have, now, to their cost t the disadvantage of having no water* From Levin, northwards, the County road is metalled for about six miles which is a great con* venience to those living near. The road above that towards Shannon^ is still in that unformed state which . . renders is almost impassable for vehicle traffic. The land on each side belongs to the Maories so, as their taxes do not increase the revenue, the state of. this road is scarcely to be wondered at. Most of the settlers have an abundant supply of apples and even hothouse grapes (grown locally) can. . - I be procured at the reasonable price of a shilling a pound. Altogether things are in rather a ,, flourishing condition and when I write again I hope to be able to > report the commencement; of some inuch-talked of residences. 1 =
