Sir Robert Stout brought out the following facts and figures : — " How our debt is mounting up : It increased in 1889-90 . . £804,857 „ „ 1890 91.. 59,405 „ 189192.. 881,288 „ 1892-98 .. 468,864 „ 1898 94.. 780,421 It has increased since the Atkinson Ministry resigned .. .. £1,580,568 Since Mr Balance's death 780,421 The interest paid in 1890 91 was .. .. £1,745,712 In 1898-94 .. .. 1,761,994 An increase of . . 16,282 per year. This year the increase will be about £40,000 more."
