Recently considerable comment ■was aroused in France by the fact coming prominently before the public that a wine merchant in the suburbs of Paris actually possessed no other name but 0. Such a simple form of name is by no means an isolated case. In Normandy there is a Marquis 0, ona of whose ancestors was Superintendent of Finances under Henry 111. On the Paris electoral lists there are several names consist f ing of a single letter, and among the last batch of volunteers for military service was a young man, who gave bis name E.F.G. The officer taking the declaration, thought at first it was a joke, and was prepared to lose his temper, but had to yield to the evidence afforded by any number of greasy " papers."
