Notes and Events.

The following is from a late Eng« lish paper !— Five gentlemen of France» and as many ladies* have determined to realise Utopia by taking off their clothes and going to live in caves in the forests of Auvergne. They will subsist upon chestnuts and the jd'obeefls of the chase. In order that the chase may not be too arduous they have stocked a plantation with rabbits, pigs, cows, goats, and fowls, and fenced it in. They have also laid in a stock of cigars* The idea is to live a life of ease and pleasure without work. The Marquis of Bute has just added another to his list of Scotch estates. He has been fortunate to engage in commercial enterprises which have yielded him so much money that he can well afford to lock some of it up in land. He was already a large Capitalist* when* seven years ago, he sold to' a company the great docks which give to Cardiff the place of third port in the Kingdom. Lord Bute then received, in addition to two million pounds' worth ofjgood interest-bearing shares, a million and a half in hard cash. Writing about the old style of remuneration of jockeys, that John Day, after winning two of the socalled classic races within a week for the Duke of G^afton, was presented by his Grace with £20, and this was thought such a sum that the presentation was made with a formal speech to mark the extiaordinary importance of the occasion. At the present time a fashionable jockey, as the phrase runs, would find from a common place person only a commonplace remark accompanying a gratuity of £500 or £1000 on achieving a wtn in a big race. . i
