The Chinese apparently intend to resist the Japanese attack by land on Port Arthur. It is reported at Chefoo that the Chinese near Port Arthur attacked and killed 800 of the . Japanese advanced guard. The Chinese put down their own loss in the engagement at 100. . "* A Japanese transport has been burned. She was crowded /with troops and coolies, to the number of 1000, and they had a very narrow escape. -.,.. An engagement took place between the Chinese and the Japanese on the mountain passes a few milei north of Port Arthur. The Chinese retreated after obstinate fighting. The loss on both sides was severe. Two Russian cruisers will convey strong reinforcements to the garrison at Yladivostock. At the Port Arthur engagement the Chinese refused to accept the assistance of the Red Cross Society, urging thai they had no desire to be sav6d, and the wounded cheerfully accepted their fate. Japan is willing to receive, through the United States Government, the Chinese proposals for the termination of the war.
