The Cheap Money Scheme.
It is understood that the Govern* ment has conferred oti Mr J. K. Warburton, Public Trustee, the* appointment of Superintendent of the Advances to Settlers Department. The appointment, it is also understood, will carry with it an increase in salary. The Public Trust Office has been selected by the Government to undertake the work of lending the £3.1)00,000 which are authorised under the Act of last session to be raised for the purpose o/ assisting settlers during the next two yearg. The Public Trust Office will, with its existing staff, both at the head offioe and its agencies, be able to carry on the new duties without being materially increased in number. When the Colonial Treasurer announced the proposals in the House he intimated that one of the lending offices would be selected for the work, and it has been understood from tbe beginning that the Public Trust Office was the Department to be selected.— N Z.
