An enquiry, ordered by the Home Offiice, into charges of cruelty at StJohu's Industrial Schools, Walthamatow, is proceeding. The Resident Chaplain, Lord Archibald Douglas, alleges that shocking cruelty has b j en inflicted on the children under the pretax of punishment. Sir Robert Hamilton has been appointed Chairman of the Board of Customs. Mr Lees, Conservative, succeeds Viscount Bury at Birkenhead, defeating Mr W. Lever, Liberal, by a majority of 106. It is expected that the Dock Com mittee will shortly erect thawing premises and that the recent invent tion of Mr Nelson will be adopted. The authorities of the War Department have inspected Mr Nelson's mechanical thawing process, and express themselves well satisfied with the result.
