The Japanese Legation has been officially informed that the loss at the battle off the Yalu was 10 officers and 69 men killed, and 169 wounded.
Captain Inglis, formerly Naval Adviser to Japan, regards the fight ; off the Yalu River as the second greatest naval battle since Trafalgar. He considers that the result of the action tends to depreciate the value of heavy guns behind thick armour. Lord Charles Beresford points out that the fact that' scarcely a vessel on either side escaped severe injury is a wholesome lesson to Great Britain, and proves the importance of having a reserve. He suggests that dock-* I yards should be built at Gibraltar, ! Malta and the Cape. A cruiser is being sent from Gibraltar to reinforce the British China squadron. Addressing a meeting in Dublin, Mr John Redmond vehemently demanded the release of those imprisoned in connection with dynamite ontrages, on the grounds that the outrages were the result of pure and high motives. It is reported that a party of British and American naval officers quarrelled and came to blows in a hotel in Honolulu, with the result that tho33 engaged were confined in their respective ships until the latter had left there. An exhibition of colonial food products has been opened at Manchester, the intention being to illustrate the facilities now afforded by the Ship Canal for direct shipment. There has beeu a large attendance, and much interest is shown in the exhibits. The Excise officers have recovered penalties from shopkeepers selling Tasmanian eucalyptus pastules without revenue stamps affixed. '
