Madagascar is the third largest island in the world and is double the size, of Great Britain and Ireland. This island was known to Arab and Indian traders hundreds of years before 1506 when the Portuguese " discovered " it. the year 1890 a declaration was signed between Great Britain and France recognising on the pan of Great Britain' the protecbrftteOVeiihe ialaHdbfMadHgasbar: Thepopiilatioh is divided into niuiiei'oiis 1 fcfibesj of which the governing is the Hova, inhabiting a province of the central highlands called Imerina. France is represented by a Resident General at the capital. The island is governed by a queen ftanavalona III* and the Prime Minister and Com-mandgr-in-Chief rejoices in the naitie of ftainiiaiarivony.
The population numbers some five millions. The capital is called Antananairivo, and the chief port of entry is Tamatave.
