HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

Friday, 21st September. The Speaker took the chair at 2.80 p.m. The Minister of Lands moved the second reading of the Lands Improvement and Native Lands Acquisition Bill. There was a long debate, during which Mr Mitchelson said he did not intend to oppose the Bill. Ik was a very desirable measure, and would meet with acceptance throughout the Colony. Sir R. Stout remarked that it could not be contended that this was not a borrowing Bill. He did not think it wise that such a large sum, as was here proposed should be asked for such purposes in one year. Mr Wilson thoroughly agreed with the principle of the Bill, and believed that no better, way of spending mon&j could be proposed than by the purchase. of Native lands for settle* ment.he thought that in constructing roads and bridges a sound principle ; •bould be laid down, so that no member of a district could get any undue advantages over another. " The Bill was read a second time by 42 votes to 7. The House adjourned at 2 a.m.
