Owing to the. threatening attitnd© of Chinese fanatics and, young recruits in Shanghai, the foreign residents are arming themselves and combining for defence. Li Hung Chang has condemned several officers and soldiers to be beheaded for the murder of the Key. Mr Wylie. The mission house is to be rebuilt, and a special tax levied on the locality for the benefit of Mr Wylie's family. The Japanese have attacked Fort Arthur by land and sea. The engagement is now proceeding. Outrages on foreigners still continue, the latest victim being M. Chaillet, French Collector of Customs in Hanoi, Anam, whose murder was \ to-day recorded. The deceased's wife and daughter were kidnapped. The French Consul has made a strong protest to the Pekin Court. H.M.fcj. Redpole has returned to Cheffoo from Port Arthur. Her r officers deny the attack made on the > latter place by the Japanese.
