We forgot to mention in our report of the Bating Club's dinner that Mr Walters made a change in the musical programme by singing a German song. Unfortunately hardly any of the company were able to follow the singer. Mr J. B. Russell sang "By the Foun tain " at lhe dinner on Monday night in his usual cultivated manner, and as the song was new it was greatly appreciated. A glimpse of the past was recalled by Mr j. E. Russell when he proposed the •oast of the flax industry, the time when forty mills were in full work, each mill's output being worth £800 a moHlh, tir a yearly sum of £i.44,000. It is quite a secret, though nearly everybody knows it, that a marriage will take place between two well-known young people of this district about the third week in September. The Foxton Good Templars have sent the following resolutions to the Premier and Mr J. G. Wilson :— That whilst they regard the proposed Licensing Bill as a distinct improvement on the existing law in many, respects, the members of the ' Try Again ' Lodge, 1.0. G.T., are strongly and unanimously of opinion that the following amendments would be judicious and of the utmost value, viz : (1) That a simple majority of those who vote shall determine the issue at the polls ; (2) That the reduction vote having already proved useless should be excluded ; (3) That liquor selling should be unlawful on half-holidays and election days ; and (4) That all license fees shall be paid into and the cost of administering the Act paid out of the consolidated fund."
