Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, AUGUST 80, 1894. The Goad Templars.
♦ We believe the members composing the " Try Again " lodge are actuated by the best intentions and when they carried the resolutions concern ing, the proposed Licencing Bill .they meant well. It appears however that without meaning it, to gain a cherished idea, they have suggested much harm being done to the rate payers, by their asking that all license fees shall be paid into the consolidated fund. At present Foxton receives £160 in license fees from hotels and should this 'sum be diverted, as the Good Templars say they desire, an equivalent amount would have to be made up in extra taxation. The ratepayers may approve, of anpther fourpence in the pound being added to their present burdens, but we doubt it, and the resolutions go to show how easily much harm Can be done to a community by those who cannot look beyond the immediate question at issue. In face of these resolutions having been sent to. the Premier, the Mayor, will find it compulsory, no doubt, to Jay the matter before the Borough Council at (heir next meeting, and
furnish fclie Oouniiil's opinion also to the Premier. The Borough has not too many sources of revenue anfl it certainly cannot afford to lose such a sum as these license fees. We notice other Temperance bodies, whilst approving of the Government hnving control of these fees, recommend that they should not be taken without recompensing the local authorities in somr other way. It would be interesting to know whether the " Try Again " lodge permitted public necessities to enter into their cr>isit!iei v atiph ahd if they did how they balanced the loss proposed to be made by the diversion of these license fees ?
