From Parliamentary Papers

The annual report on the Department of Lands and Survey is a heavy production consisting of 187 pages* besides maps and photographs. The photographs ai'e excellent and appear to have been" takeh by thy surveyors attached to the department.

The view of the Orateral lakev Kuapehu accompanies a report by MVH. Dunnage on the exploration of that mountain. He says there appears to be a rift on the south-west between the bare rocks and the snowfield that extends from the west to the south. He believes the water from the lake finds egress at that point and forms the source of the Wangaehu.

Another view is that of Abakune with Kuapehu in the distance, and it is a pretty scene.

The view of the top of Buapehu shows a very rough and broken picture, not enticing in any way.

Mr Arthur P. Harper has supplied a number of views — the Waiho country, mountain vegetation ; Franz Josef glacier, from camp No. 6 — a very fine view ; five views on the same glacier, one of which, the Unser Fritz Waterfall, from camp No. 5, shows what must be a beautiful sight ; another view of the glacier from Peter's pond is also a very striking- one ; then another view gives a picture of climbing in the rough ice ; we get another view of the glacier from camp No. 2 ; Lake Mapounka is another excellent picture giving the lower portion of the glacier from a trig station. The outlet of the glacier is the last of this series.

Three more excellent photographs are given, the s.s. " Wairere " at Pipiriki, Wanganui river ; Hiruharama, Wanganui river ; and Waka • poka, Wanganui river. A large lithograph of Mount Tarawera and Lake Botomahana is also to be found in the Report, as seen from To Hape-o-toroa hill. Taking into consideration the illustrations only the report should be well worth the price to the public, without valuing the interesting reports of explorers, or the mass of the tabular information also given in it. We shall refer to this work

early again.
