A New Flax Dressing Machine.
A resident of Lower Hutt has perfected a machine for dressing flax, which he claims will effect a great saving as to quantity and cost of production. The leaf runs from the " feed " of the maohine under a, plough on the knife, which splits it, then it passes between two tightly set rollers, which causes most of the gum to exude, the residuum being got rid of by the remaining portion of tho operation which drags away the green envelope, leaving the fibre to fall under the machine practically ready for baling after a few hours' drying. The removal of the outer coating is effected by means of 1 knives placed lengthwise on two rapidly revolving drums, which are set sufficiently close together to allow the leaf to pass between the scrapers or knives. The inventor ' states he can put through from lo cwt, to a ton of cut flax per hour, and that the machine requires only half the motive power needed by the other flax dressing machines. — Press Association.
