Auction Sale.
Arbor Day cornea but once a year, and is to be, this year, the first of next month. Afc present our local authorities have ignored the matter, and bid well to keep on ignoring, why ? This we must leave to the Mayor and Borough Councillors to explain. There is a nice handy triangle at the top of Main street which should be planted, therefore why not do it on Arbor Day. We have at present no town band, but then music should be possible as our public men are no mean hands at blowing their own trumpets, so all there is to do ig to bring them along and there will be music wherever they go, just like the old lady who had bells on her toes. We do not urge too heavy planting as there has bten a very good share done, but as the Government desire some interest taken, our public men should superintend the day's outing, and let our future Councillors make their first attempt at beautifying the town.
On Saturday Messrs McMillan, Rhodes & Co. hold an auction sale of trees from Mr James Laird's nursery which would appear most opportune to those who desire to encourage the celebration of Arbor Day. The Government advised an appeal to be made to the public for trees, and if that appeal was made, the trees will be here on the spot.
Whether people buy for Arbor Day or. not they will have an excellent chance of securing trees of. the best of their kind. Mr Laird's word can be accepted as to whether apples ate blight proof or not, and we have a considerable number of his trees in our own orchard which have given every satisfaction. The sale should be a most successful one, and prices should rule fair.
