American Labour Troubles.
Working men have appealed to the President to visit Chicago personally and redress their grievances. Deb*, the leader of the men, has announced that the strike is at an end.
It is estimated that the cost to the Government of stopping the strike has been £200,006. The President intends to appoint a Commission to enquire into the causes of the recent movement. The managers of the railway companies have declined to confer with Debs regarding the reinsfcatementmL.., the men who left work. The employees ot the Pullmlw^ Company decline to yield. Strikers threw a mail train in Indiana off the rails. Two persona were killed outright, and many fatally injured. Four million dollar's worth of railway property have been destroyed by the strikers in Chioago. Thousands of men, who went out, are deserting the Unions and re* turning to work. Debs, the leader of the Railway Union, is endeavouring to arrange a renewal of the strike. The members of a company of militia have been arrested at Chicago for mutiny. They declined to serve against the strikers. It is expected that one consequence of the failure of the strike will be the disappearance of the Railway Union. The Pullman Palace Car Company's operatives have resumed work at the old rate of wages. The contents of a military waggon exploded in the streets of Chicago, killing a number of soldiers and civilians.
