Le Galas.

■» ■ ■'— One of the latest additions to the Jardin d' Acclimatation is the recent 1 arrival from Africa of a large bird, called "Le Calas," similar in appearance to a turkey-cock, but more beautiful on account of its fine plumage and its light and graceful movements. One of the most in" teresting habits of this remarkable bird is the manner in which it constructs its nesfc. By means of its long beak and claws it makes a large hole in the trunk of a tree for its companion, which protects her from danger while sitting on the eggs, the male constantly supplying her with food until the young are able to take care of themselves.
