The Palmerston Drainage Loan.
For the second time within a few weeks the attempt to obtain the consent of a majority of the ratepayers to a loan of £1600 for necessary drainage work in the Borough has been unsuccessful, ftofc because a 1 majority of the burgesses were against the loan, but for the reason that it is next to an impossibility to comply with the requirements of the Act in reference to half the voterg polling. The result is one to be regretted, as it will accentuate all the more strongly the deplorable condi* tion the finances of the Borough have been allowed to drift into for the last seven or eight years. We understand that the Mayor intends to lay a bold unvarnished tale before the ratepayers at an early date to enable the position to be grasped in every detail, and it is to be hoped some satisfactory solution of the very difficult problem to be faced will be the outcome.— Standard.
