A Hare caught by a Cat.

On Saturday last Mr Thomas Mitchell's sons were playing with some companions in their garden at Foxton when they heard a noise in some scrub. The boys jumped through the fence and went to the place from which the noise proceeded believing that a woodhen had been caught in the grass. One of the boys thrust his hand into the scrub at the spot from which the noise appeared to come and seized something. He found it was a hare. Ie struggled away leaving some of its fur in his hand. From subsequent events he believes he disturbed a contest between a cat and a hare. The have ran under a pailing fence near at hand followed by a grey torn cat which chased it. A little terrier pup tried to seize it as it was passing but the hare knocked it over and sent it rolling down the hill. A little further on, as the hare was running up a sand bank, it slipped on the loose sand, and the cat overtook it and caught it by the throat with its teeth, and they both rolled together down the bank struggling. When they reached the bottom, the cat retained its hold until one of the boys secured the hare and killed it. They noticed the cat was injured and on examining its head they found a wound evidently inflicted by a bite from the hare. We should advise boys to encourage the cat to give up catching mice and rats and apply its agility to catching hares.
