Lieut. -General Chesney, in an article in the Nineteenth Century, points out the urgent necessity of again legalising tha suppression of the Indian native seditious newspapers after having been warned, as he says they are doing an immense amount of harm in India. The call made by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company has been almost unanimously responded to. Shares in the Bank of New Zealand are quoted at — new issue, £5 10a ; old issue, £8 lOs. Lancashire and Yorkshire mer chants largely support the formation of the Victorian Co-operative Producers' Company, to sell to the consumers direct butter, cheese, wine and fruit. It is suggested in the press to convert the Imperial Institute as the Masonic Head-quarters, and thus supply a read need.
