New Use for Town Refuse.
In February a large company of engineers, scientists, and journalists travelled down from London to Halifax to inspect Livet's system of steam generation, which demonstrates the fact that all kinds of rubbish' gathered from the streets can be ntitised as fnel, and wil burn even more furiously than ordinary goal. All methods tried up to the present time have been based on the Assumption that, until the moisture contained in waste was dried out
complete combustion could not take place. The best results yet obtained in this direction are those of Mr Watson at Oldham, whose 3ystem evaporates fib. ot water in the combustion of 111 bof town refuse. The immense leap forward from fib. of water evaporated to over 31b. is obtained by the Livet generator. Under this system refuse is burned without previous treatment. A high draught is obtained at the furnace without the aid of steam jet or other artificial assistance. Halifax has an installation of the electric light, with a capacity equal to 100 effective electrical units, or 10,000 incandescent lamps of 10 candle power each, burning six hours per diem. The light is maintained under Livet's system by the combustion of only 3,000 tons (or onethird) of the refuse of the town per annum. It is probable that an effort will be made to introduce the system to London.
