The French Exhibition of 1900.
, ; . Though,, it may seem a far cry to 1900, in reality the six years and a quarter which must elapse ere the Exhibition of 1900 will open its portals, will be none too much time in which to accomplish the great engineering feats which are to astonish the world. In the first place it has been decided to hold the Exhibition in the Champ de Mars, a graat deal of re- arrangement will be necessary, and the buildings left standing from 1889 are not a legacy which the Commissioners regard with anyconsidtrable pleasure. In the next place the Eiffel Tower is not to be the central point of attraction, but it is far too large to be hidden away or ignored, and to pull it down would cost quite three million francs. The Machine Gallery is another " white elephant." It cost seven million francs to build it, but when the Commissioners tried to sell it the other day, they obtained no offers until a railway company generously offered to take it for nothing ! The most important modification in the exhibits will be in the way of classification. All the machinery connected with each department will be kept distinct along with the articles conneoted with it, and the machinery of all sorts will not be placed together as in the last Exhibition. As the vast Machine Gallery cannot be otherwise disposed of, it will probably be used as an agricultural exhibition. Many of the foreign pavilions will play a more important part in the general plan than it did on the last occasion. The Palais de l'lndustrie will also be included in the Exhibition precincts, and the Art Galleries will doubtless be accommodated there. A retrospective view of the Art of the Century will form one of the attractions of the Exhibition, and will doubtles be necessary to add two large galleries to the Palais de l'lndustrie. As for the " hanging garden " over the Seine it will be rather a large bridge than any thing else, and will have a beautiful pavil ion in the centre.
