Public Meeting.

A public meeting was held at Messrs McMillan, Rhodes & (Vs. auction rooms on Thursday after>. . noon. There was a fair representative gathering. Mr T. P. Williams, the Mayor, was voted to the chair. ** <_, Mr Williams said he understood the meeting was called to consider the advisability of establishing a cheese or butter factory. Since the last meeting very little had been done, though some correspondence had taken place. He considered that it was needful to canvass for shares, &c, establish a company for themselves. If the company was a floated he believed it would be a* success. He would read a letter received from the Dairy Instructor, Mr John Sawera.

Department of Agriculture, Dunedin, 10th March, 1894,

Sin,— l regret through absence from office and a subsequent accumulation of urgent work on hand on arrival in not being able to send you desired information regarding Dahy Factory sooner. Under separate cover I forward you three small pamphlets on Cheese and Butter Factories, their construction, equipment and management. For information concerning Cheese Factory such as you would require see pages 5 and 6. For by-laws specifying the conditions under which milk is received at factories tee pages 13, 14 and 15. Please make a careful pernml of this pamphlet. I also send you two copies of my annual reports for season's 1891-92 and 1892-93. Enclosed along with pamphlets you will find a copy of " Memorandum and Articles of Association" of a Co-operative Dairy Company. I would advise you to write to the Secretary, Cheltenham Co-operative Dairy Company, Cheltenham, near Feilding, for a copy of their "Memorandum and Articles of Association " as I consider they are well drawn up. I also forward you plans, with accompanying " Memorandum of Agreement," general conditions of contract, specifications and list of quantities of building material required, for a cheese factory capable of manipulating the milk of from 450 to 500 cows. If you decide to build from these plans I would strongly advise yon to put in 12ft studs, not 10ft studs as shown in plan 12ft studs ensures much better ventilation.

Should you desire further information jnst let rue know. Yours truly,

John Sxwers, Dairy Instructor.

(The plans and specifications were

also enclosed). The probable cost of erecting of plant and building for cheese would be £675, which includes an 8 h.p. engine, vats, &c. ; for butter the cost ~ is estimated at £760. He thought that the company could be floated with half the capital subscribed. Mr Hennessy said .that, on the night Mr Sawers pressed the meeting a committee was appointed. When the ; committee- • *foet • ' -tßey arranged to interview Mr T. Wilson, manager of the Motoa estate who received them very pleasantly, and*^ had promised to write to the estate's company. The following letter had since been received from Mr Wilson.
