Abbe Legrand.
The Abbe Legraud who died the other day was a very interesting personage, and during the 86 years of his useful life had seen many stirring sights, in the French capital. He was amongst other things famous for his expoit of helping to save the life of M. Jules Ferry during the dangers of the Commune. M. Ferry, as Mayor of Paris, was one of the last representatives of the Government who continued to show fight to the insurrectionists before the establishment of the Government headquarters at Versailles. Being recognised in the streets, he was pursued by a howling mob, crying " Death to Ferry I" M. Ferry took refuge in the town hall of the Ist Aoronde'ssement, whence there was a aubterannean passage to the Vicarage of St. Germaine e'Aurierrofs. Escaping by this passage, he was kindly received by the Abbe Legrand, irho let him out by a side door quite unnoticed.
