A bomb exploded on Friday outside the Italian Chamber of Deputies soou after the adjournment. Five persons were injured, but none of them were members. All the windows in the building and the vicinity were smashed by the force of the explosion. The bomb was timed to explode as the deputies were leaving the Chamber, but the intended slaughter was frustrated by both Houses adjourning unexpectedly. From Calcutta it is stated that Colonel Maxwell's column, which has been operating against the Abors tribesmen, was compelled to retreat after two days' hard fighting.. A band of thirty rifles, under British officers, was cut to pieces by the rebels while marching to the relief of the detachment which was defeated by the natives at Borlax some days ago. It is feared that Colonel Maxwell's expedition, which consists of 400 men, is in a critical position, communication by the various routes being stopped. The news that a native detachment had been massacred by the rebels is confirmed. The Cape Government has instructed Major Elliot, who is in command of the military expedition in Pondoland, to annex the country. The shareholders in the Panama Canal Company are forming a new company to complete the canal.
