A caution to sheep-owners.
At Palmerston yesterday before 11. W.Brabant, Esq., 8 M., Alexander Farmer was charged by Mr i Blnndell, Sheep Inspector, with r failing to brand 100 sheep after shearing as provided by the Act. He pleaded guilty, but paid he had erred through ignorance. He understood that the Act did not provide for the branding of lambs until tho 30th April. Informant said he was satisfied that defendant had erred through ignorance. Unless the amending Act was read with the Act itself, it was easy to make a mistake. The amending Act, however, defined sheep to include lambs. He had only brought the case as a warning to sheepfarmers, and as it Was the first case brought under that clause of the Act he would askthat a minimum pe-nalty be inflicted. His Worship fined .defendant Id per sheep, with costs amounting to 7s. Christian Jensen pleaded guilty to a , similar offence, and offered the same excuse. He was find Id per sheep on 100 sheep, with costs amounting to 15s 4d. — Times.
