A Letter from the Queen.
— « In "Dean Stanley's Life," recently published, is the following letter from the Queen, which sets forth, in the most touching language, ' Her Majesty's poignant sense of the loss she had sustained in tho death of Lord Beaconsfield : Osborne, April 22n1, 1881. Dear Dean,— Thank you very much foi your sympathy in the loss • of my dear, great friend, whose death on Tuesday last completely overwhelmed me. His devotion and kindness to me, his wise counsels, his great gentleness combined with fairness, his one thought of the honour and glory of the country, and his unswerving loyalty to the Throne, made the s ath of my dear Lord Beaconsfield national calamity. My grief is great and lasting. I know he would wish to rest with the wife he loved so well, and not in Westminster Abbey, where, however, I am anxious that a monument should be erected to his memory.
