Constables Gillespie, Smith and O'Rourke have been appointed dog tax collectors for the Horowhenua County. The fire on Friday destroyed four unique wooden brackets used to support the counter in Mr Hamer's shop. Many years ago when Mr Thynne was having the building erected he designed a handsome counter containing many kinds of New Zealand woods, and a friend of his, the late Mr William Hadfield, lent his kind services and carved four brackets in the the resemblance of Maori carving, natives squatting on a log with tongue protruding, face naturally tatooed, and pawa shell eyes. This was a labour of love on the part of the late Mr Hadfield, but they proved his skill as a carver, and were always admired. Their being destroyed is a great loss. The Manawatu County Council meets to-morrow. The usual special tram will be run that day. It will not be overlooked that tomorrow evening a cheap excursion train runs to Palmerston and back. We hope the efforts of the Traffic Manager will be met by a good use being made of the opportunity. Sheep-owners made very good use of the Carnarvon-Sanson Tramway this last season, as 2050 bales were sent over it to Foxton. Arthur Gunn, of Good Samaritan fame, pleaded guilty to running a lottery, and so was fined by the Wellington R.M. £25 or three months' hard labour. Firstly he said he would take the alternative, but secondly thought better of it and paid the amount. It is rather late in the day to receive the information, but a Parliamentary paper just published states that during 1892, 396,837 sheep skins with wool were exported from New Zealand, and 1,809,979 without wool. The total number of totalisator licenses issued in 1889-90 were 187 ; in 1890-91, 219 ; in 1891-92, 234 ; and in 1892-93, 240. Between Ist April, 1872, to the 31st March, 1893, the following districts paid the amounts mentioned for the totalisator tax :— Auckland £1879, Taranaki £449, Wellington £2509, Hawke's Bay £1425, Nelson £106;, Marlborough £50, Canterbury £2139, Otago £1586, Southland £303, and Westland £342. In pulling down the old kitchen at the Manawatu Hotel two rats nests were discovered lying within which were good matches. In the shop chopped down on Friday a similar nest with matches was found. How many people have had unjust suspicions cast on them, owing to a rat desiring to munch a match ? Mr Stead, writing of the late Sir Robert Morier, says : — " His language, when he let himself go, was something to remember rather than to repeat; but these idiosyncracies added to the fascination of his of discourse." The Wellington Coroner inquired into a curious case of accidental poisoning last week. In her evidence the mother of the deceased child, stated that on the 3rd inst. the infant received a bruise on its forehead from a fall. She gave it a Guy teething powder, which was bought at a chemist's shop in Tory street, but afterward sent for some chlorodyne from the same chemist's, and, pouring some into a glass, drank half of it herself, and gave the remainder to the child. She could not say how much she gave it It was always a delicate child, She had lost two other children in a similar way— one 10 weeks and the other 11 weeks old. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death from an overdose of chlorodym , and added a rider that the authorities should require chlorodyne to be distinctly marked as a poison. A widow lady, member of the Methodist Church, Binghampton, New York, took to riding a bicycle to church with the result that at a weekly prayer meeting one of the deacons denounced the act as " unladylike, unchristianlike and a disgrace to the church." The Advocate says : — Ninety-two passengers travelled to Foxton by the tram on Wednesday. It arrived back at Sandon at 12.30 a.m. The holiday makers were unanimous in their praise of he hospitality which was extended to them by the Foxton Good Templars. Tendering for the metalling contract for the Borough was proof that work was much needed for teams. It is a pity the price was so low but then it is undoubtedly better to have some work for your horses to do instead of letting them eat their heads off, or else letting them got out of condition. The fire has been answerable for many interruptions. It has stopped the committee of the Athletic meeting from going round to canvass for subscriptions, but they intend doing so at once, and they have convened a meeting for Thursday to report results. We hope every support will be accorded to them, as the fire has not damaged everyone. Messrs Abraham & Williams hold a sale at Levin on Wednesday 21st, and at Otaki on Friday. Gothic consists of a small printing plant, worked by a competent printer, who is employed solely for the printing of menu cards, concert programmes, and all necessary items pertaining to the clerical work on board. The Wellington and Manawatu Railway Co. , give notice of their intention to take land for the purposes of the line. Plans can be seen at the Post Offices at Longburn and Palmerston North, and the Public Works Office, Wellington. His Worship the Mayor has just received a telegram from the Premier notifying that he will visit Foxton on Friday. In the evening he will deliver an address at the Public Hall. Yesterday afternoon directly after the train passed a fire broke out on the racecourse destroying ten chains of fencing and the plantation of trees for that distance. Many went up and helped to stop the progress of the flames, and the railway men were hard at work late repairing damages. These fires in this spot are getting a little too frequent. The Chief Justice gave the decision of the Court as follows : — We intimate now that we shall report that the Waitemata seat is voided by bribery and treating by Mr Monk's agents, though without his knowledge, being committed by his agents, for whom he was responsible. Mr Monk will have to pay the petitioner's costs. The previous Act provides absolute disqualification for a certain period, but the amended Act of 1892 gives discretion in framing a report The this case we shall report as we did in the case of Te Aroha petition that the disqualification of the unseated member shall be for one year. We do not think it would be fair that the ousted candidate should be allowed to be a candidate at the next election for the same seat. In a description of the new steamer Gothic the Wellington morning paper thus beautifully sums up— that for completeness of detail, beauty of finish and general completeness, the Gothic must lake precedence of all others which have visited this port. We much regret to learn that Mr Cherret, printer of Palmerston North, died last week He leaves a widow and two grown up daughters. A heart on the right side of the body is a decided freak of nature. The phenomenon, however, has just been noted in Paris, where a doctor, making a post mortem examination on an old man, was astonished to find the heart situated on exactly the opposite side of its proper position. Yet the owner of this misplaced organ had lived comfortably for 85 years, with very little illness, and died at last from a fall.— London Globe.
