His early life was "* devoted to a deep study of history * and literature, During the Franco German war he joined the Mobil 2a of the Ande, who were drafted in Paris, and was decorated with the Cross of the' Legion of Honour for his gallant conduct during the siege. He was initiated into political life as chef de cabinet to his father, who '■.yss- Minister of the Interior in* the of February 19, 187$. iln 1874 his father resigned his seat as General Councillor for the Ande and presented his son to the electors of Nogenfc-surr.Seinej where he was "^elected without opposition. He was relumed to the Chamber without opposition for the same constituency at the General elections of 1876, and' vbted with the Left Centre and Republican Left groups. In 1877 ,at -the" elections which followed the Broglie Cabinet he was again re turned for Nogent-sur- Seine by 0,615 votes against B,4QQ cast for his opponent. V Bonaparfciat.
