Bismarck v. Emperor.
Dr Hans Blum, in his new book, " The German Empire in Prince Bismarck's Day," gives a piquant version of the cause of quarrel between the Emperor William and Bismarck : — lmmediately after hearing of Prince Bismarck's interview with Dr Windthorst, the famous leader of ths Centre Party in the Reichstag, the Emperor sent Privy Councillor Lucanus to the Chancellor with the following message : — I Tbe Emperor requires that Prinoe Bismarck should not receive membora of the Reichstag without previously reporting to his Majesty." To this Prince Bismarck replied II Please tell the Emperor that I allow do one to have any control over my own threshold." The next morning, that is on the 15th March, 1890, the Emperor rose early and went to i he Prince's residence, where he declared he had every right to know of the Chancellor's negotiations with party leaders. The Prince, however, refused to admit his Imperial master's claim and repeated his observation of the previous night. The Emperor, in much agitation, replied, " Not even when I command you to do it as your Sovereign?" To this Prince Bismarck rejoined "My master's authority ends at my wife's drawingroom." ______
