Manawatu Hearald. SATURDAY, JAN. 6, 1894. A Regatta.

A meeting is advertised for Wednesday next to consider whether a Regatta shall be held, and if so, where. We cannot believe that there will be any doubt as to the advisableness of having a regatta, as with the river at our doors and a successful Rowing Club formed among our residents, a day's carnival on the water is the most natural amusement to foster. Therefore a regatta somewhere on the river seems a sure fact. Last year we suggested that the site for a regatta was that portion of the river about the Wirokino Perry known as the Long Reach, as visitors would have a longer and better view of the contest in the various events. We hold that the site also offers many very pretty spots on the banks for picnicing and would also enable us to meet our neighbours at Shannon and Levin on neutral ground. We have no doubt but that they enjoy a holiday as well as others do, and it would be a thorough change from their monotonous bush scenery to see the open country and our glorious rivar. We, by holding a regatta at that point would be able to seek the support and co-operation of these two townships and thus make the gathering laiger and more represen tative.

We trust the meeting will discuss this suggestion from all points, because we know that some persons think Wirokino would be too far to travel to. People go out for the day and it would be an easy matter to arrange for a conveyance for the women and little ones, and we have a river steamer, a good coach service, and the road and the river. If arrangements cannot be suggested to move a large number of our population some four miles with the conveniences we possess, we are much worse placed than we hold we

Rowing is a healthy exercise and should be encouraged in every way, and therefore a regatta must be held, but we certainly should like more fun imparted to the regatta than we have had, and some means devised to further amuse the spectators. These things can be done and very likely will be done. At any rate- we hope to see a good number attend the meeting. /
