.*- . ». - — -W*- : — r-T The Opposition have been ■> telling the electors that the present Liberal Government have been living on sly borrowing. Of course Ministers and their newspapers were shocked at such statements, those who uttered them were lineal descendants of Arnnanias of unenviable reputation. They must feel a bit " knocked over " by the Treasurer's speech at Inveroargill. Mr Ward denied that utilising (what a pretty word) the sinking fund of £256,000 was borrowing ! There is a grand new dictionay just published comprising some six volumes, which promises to b> of exceeding use to politicians as it is stated to contain some 215,---000 w,ords, and possibly Mr Ward has discovered some new explanation of the word " utilise." It is beyond doubt that tone able to "utilise" this sum of money he had to "obtain " it, in some way, either by borrowing or- 'stealing.- The Opposition hAYei^U^ aiong- admitted that the obv J e'rnm6nt " utilised " this money, fmr theii -own ends, but also asserted that they borrowed it, which appears now to be owned up to by the Colonial Treasurer. TJjje-^easurer ■•made another gtat^ent which wants a little think. ingisiJMgiisttg.', /'/whether money was borycjptt pr'iipt, the indebtedness of the ; colony wonld increase." This appears a , p'tirely' Liberal manner of looking at finance. How is our in • deblbedness to increase if we borrow no further, and " utilise " no further and- pay- our interest. Under Liberal guidance we have no hope that our indebtedness will decrease, as the sum of £256,000 set aside by other Governments to reduce our debts has been so successfully ♦' utilise^ '""that there is none of it leftl -As *. purely democratic and economic- Government it casts a datnper otithe success of the Liberals at* the coming election to have the Treasum\a.Sße ( rt v .that . the indebtedof the W-pWd increase !
