Another Salvation Army Prosecution.
At Milton on Wednesday, before Mr Hawkins, R.M., and Mr Brown, J.P., Colonel Bailey and Major Robinson, of the Salvation Army, were charged with a breach of the by-laws by playing a musical instrument on October 12. The courthouse was crowded. Mr I). Reid appeared for the prosecution, but defendants were not represented by counsel. The Town Clerk gave evidence, in the course of which it appeared he had no special authority to lay the information, the general authority passed beiug given to Constable King, The Resident Magistrate said the ease would have to be treated as a private information. Defendants pleaded guilty. The Bench fined each of them 2s 6d, with 12s costs. Colonel Bailey asked what the alternative, as he had conscientious objections to paying the fines. Mr Hawkins, nfter characterising this as ridiculous and absurd, intimated that the alternative was seven days' imprisonment. Both defendants go to gaol. — Press Association.
