The statement oi an eye-witness
has been published as throwing some further light on the direct cause of the outbreak of actual ho.aHHMes in Africa. It is to the effect that the Matabales made incursion into the country in the Vicinity of Fort Victoria in September ; but that when, in obi-diance to the commands of Pr Jameson, the Administrator of Mashoimland, they Were peacefully retiring, the Chartered Company's forces pursued them and shot them down like rabbits. The natives did not return the fire, and continued their retreat without retaliating. No quarter was given, the wounded Matabeles being brained or shot, and the scene is described as one of revolting brutality. A batt c was expected to be fought on Thursday in the vicinity of Shangain Eiver between the Chartered Company's forces and the Matabeles. It is reported that Major Tendy has been killed in a skirmish with the natives. The Chartered Company will protest against Sir H. Loch parleying with Lobengula without first constilting Mr Cecil Rhodes. The company's officers declare that the account given by an eye* witness of atrocities alleged to have been committed on the Matabeles by the Fort Victoria column in September is a calumny. Sir H. Loch is making full enquiries into the truth of the accusations contained in the statement. Sir Henry Loch is pushing forward reinf .rcsmautsto Mashonaland. President Kruger fears that the apparent absence of concert between the British Government and the Chartered Company will bring about a disaster to the forces as the latter are advancing rashly, and without clearing the country.
