Manawatu County Council.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Council was held at their Chambers, Sanson, yesterday. The gentlemen present were : — Councillors V. C. Ransom (Chairman), F. Robinson, T. Masters, W. Taylor, H. Hammond and J. G. Wilson. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed, and the inward correspondence was read. A letter from Cr. A. Strang, applying for leave o£ absence from the meeting was read, and presuming that the consideration of the proposed' loan for the Moutoa road formation and advertising the same would be left over until the next meeting. From F. Arkwright, managing director of the Marton Mercury, applying for a share of the Council's advertising, and agreeing to do the same for 2s per inch for the first insertion, and Is per inch for all subsequent ones. — The Council decided that the present arrangement had so far proved satisfactory, and could not alter it. From J. Thompson, Sandon, complaining of the bad state of the road leading into his property, and agreeing to form it if the Council would metal it. From Eowe * Sons, asking the Council to call for tenders for the metalling of the road past their mill. From P. E. Daniel), Scott's Ferry, wishing to be furnished with the boundaries of the Ferry Reserve. From the ranger, reporting that he had impounded some 30 head of cattle and 20 horses. From J. Hillary, the late lessee of the Shannon Ferry, asking for some remuneration for work done at the ferry. From the Treasury, for particulars as to the total cost of the bridge over the Oroua River. From Mr Reaner, manager of the Kopani Estate, drawing the attention of the Council to some culverts that affect his pro perty. From A. L. Beattif, Locomotive Engineer, VVanganui, saying the engine " Fox " would be delivered at Carnarvon Junction on Thursday, 12th Oct., and requesting the Council to take delivery. From J. H. Hankins, referring to the lease of the Shannon Ferry to John Wilson. From 15. H. Beere, Wellington, >v proposed railway from Levin to Great ford, staling ho had an offer from some ene willing to provide the money required, provided the district guaranteed 5 per cent, on the outlay, and that if the Hue paid anything it would go against the guarantee ; and also saying that copies of the letter had been sent to the Mayor of Foxton and the other local bodies interested. From Mr and Mrs Giesen, complaining of a drain that overflowed their property. From J. W. Gower, asking that B. G Gowei's name be placed on the ralo roll for properly in Foxton lately occupiidhy him ; from John Carter, asking thnt sections 1)4, C/>, l>(s, Mr. l.'obinson, be transferred from himself to S. W Carter on rate-roll ; from John Saxon, asking that section 94 and part of section y5, Block XIII, Oroua, be altered on rate roll to I'iTc.v UiuTe-11, who has purchased the same. Proposed by Cr Hobinaon, seconded by Cr Hammond, That leave of absence be granted to Cr Strang for this meetiug. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Taylor, seconded by Cr Hammond," That the transfer of section SIS, Block XIII, Oroua, from John Saxon to Percy Burrell, and sections (54. 65, (>(>, Mount Robinson, from John Carter to S. W. Carter be granted, and that the alteration in the rate-book as requested by Mr J. W. Gower to that of his son be made. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Ransom, seconded by Cr Taylor, That the overseer be instructed to visit culverts complained of by Mr Reaner, and report at next meeting. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Wilson, seconded by Cr Masters, That the overseer be instructed to inspect the drain in front of Mr Giesen 's property at once, and if the cost of putting in a drain can be not more than £5 without interfering with any other property or rendering the Council liable for water damage that the overseer have the work carried out. If the cost will be more than £5 the overseer to report to the next meeting. Proposed by Cr Masters, seconded by Cr Robinson, That the street from the County road leading to Mr J. Thompson's be metalled on condition that he forms the said street 16 feet wide. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Wilson, seconded by Cr Ransom, That Mr Beere's letter be replied to, to the effect that although the Council would be glad to see the railway made through to Levin and Kakaviki, it could not entertain the proposal, as it is outside the powers .conferred on it by the Counties Act. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Wilson, seconded by Cr Hammond, That the Council grant the request of the Awahnri School Committee, for the use of a blind street on condition that it is understood that the Committee allow anyone wishing to use the road to do so— such permission to be at the pleasure of the Council. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Taylor, seconded by Cr Robinson, That Mr Daniell be referred to the Gazette notice in the New Zea'and Gazette of October flth, 1890, defining the boundaries of Ferry Reserve. — Carried. Proponed by Cr Taylor, seconded by Cr Hammond, That Mr Hillary be informed that this Council can recognise no claim for keeping the approaches to the Shannon ferry in good order. —Carried. Proposed by Cr Taylor, seconded by Cr Robinson, That Mr M. Boyle's tender for re-formation on Foxton- Sanson road at 6s s£d per chain, and for re-formation on Campion's line at 5s lid per chain be accepted; and James Cotterill's for drain and formation on Main Drain road at 28s per chain be accepted. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Robinson, seconded by Cr Masters, That the action of Councillor Taylor in calling for tenders on Campion's Line be agreed to. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Robinson, seconded by Cr Wilson, That the tenders of D. Fitzgerald at 11s 5d per chain for 60 chains on Main roa(is from peg 1 to 4, and Hickford' s

Proposed by Cr Masters, seconded by Cr Wilson, That the resolution passed at the meeting of the Council held on 9th August, 1893, agreeing to borrow the sum of t'HOO under •' The Local Bodies Loans Act, 1880," for special works in the Sandon Hiding be rescinded. — tarried. Proposed by Cr Taylor, seconded by Cr Robinson, That the Chairman and Cr Hammond sign and seal the Shannon Ferry lease.— Carried. Proposed by Cr Taylor, seconded by Cr Hansom, That the next meeting of this Council be held on Friday, 3rd November. — ( im'ied. The overseefs report showed tile i'dads in the County were getting in a fair state. The accounts were passed for payment. The Council then adjourned.
