A Good Jumper.

In the hunting notes of last week's Referee, the death is announced of a celebrated hunter named "Fox,"' owned by the master of the Brackenfidd hounds, North Canterbury. Mr Moore informs the Referee that this horse was one of the hunters which he sjld last y?ar when he came 'up here, and was a horse of more than ordinary notoriety. He was a black hovs°, by Guy Fawlces, standing fully 10 hands 8 inches in height, and was considered one of the finest wi'-e jumpers in North Canterbury, the home of Iho wire jumpers. On one occasion, some throe years ago, on the estate of the late Edward Chapman, Spring Bank, Fox made an extraordinary jump with him. He ran off a gate and jumped over the corner of a young plantation, clearing two ordinary wire fences 16 feet apart. Upon being measured it was found the horse had cleared, from take off to landing place, just 82 feet. Three witnesses were present, who thought a severe accident was about to occur, but were agree' ably surprised to see the horse clear the jump. In addition to his jump 1 ing proclivities, Fox was a first class dog-cart horse, both in the wheel and as a tandem leader, and on a good road could always be driven up to 16 miles an hour. Three days be» fore his death, Fox ran third in the Hunter's Steeplechase at Amberley, carrying 14st.
