When the least effort is proposed whereby the industrious and frugal might make an effort to restrain the temptations offered to these helpless creatures, a cry is raised that the liberty of the subject is in danger. The liberty of the subject is much more endangered when the intelligent and industrious are handicapped in voting against the drunken and improvident. In spite of this the Premier views his licensing bill with intense satisfaction. Four hundred men who love beer are better by far than six hundred men who object to it. There is no accounting for tastes, and it is to be regretted that the Premier of this colony has to be judged by the company he keeps.
