London.
The Times, the Pall Mall Gazette and other newspapers demand that the British Government should take steps to prevent France proclaiming a protectorate over Siam.
The Manchester Chamber of Commerce has made a protest to Lord Rosebery, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, against the French action of Siam.
Mi- Gladstone moved the third reading of the Home Rule Bill. He said that in spite of the deliberate and persistent efforts oi the Opposition they had now arrived at the last stage. The Government had been compelled to apply the closure in order to fulfil the mandate of the country. The Opposition had been pleased to regard the measure as a monstrous and hideous one, and backed up their opinion with falsehoods ; but, he said, the passage of the Bill through the House of Commons had been a great triumph.
The Singapore commercial men have appealed to Lord Rosebery to prevent the stoppage of trade with Bangkok. They urge that if the French demands are persisted in it will inevitably result in a protectorate over Siam.
