Parliamant.

house of eepeesentatives. Thursday, July 20. The Speaker took the chair at 2.30 p.m. The Road* Act Amendment Bill was read a first time. Mr Allan continued the financial debate, during which the Times re ports that Mr Wilson thought that a readjustment of local taxation was necessary. He was glad that an additional vote was proposed for surveys, as such expenditure was absolutely necessary. He did not believe that any of the members of the House who had not been in the district had any idea of the difficulties which the special settlers in the Taranaki district had to contend with, for the want of good roads. Mr Wilson reviewed the figures of the Financial Statement at considerable length, and maintained that it would be much better to go to the London market and borrow than to simply try to get a semblance of nonborrowing by getting hold of trust funds and trying to make out that they were not borrowing. He regretted that the Government were not doing anything to encourage the flax industry. He was in favour of the remission of improvements. The debate was adjourned, on the motion of Mr J. W. Kelly. The House adjourned at 1.25 a.m.
