Wanganui Education Board

The ordinary monthly meeting of Education Board was commenced on Monday. Present — Messrs Notman (Chairman), Sanson, Bridge, Ross, Baker, Fry, Hurley, and Beckett. The following business of interest to this district was transacted : — From the Palmerston Committee and teacher recommending the appointment of Eleanor M. Anderson and May Scott as cadets. .Resolved that Miss Scott be appointed, and the Committee b? asked to recommend a male cadet. From the Normanby Committee recommending the appointment of Miss Ballantyne as assistant. Appointment confirmed. From Sarah Broadbell, applying for cadetship. Resolved that attendance does not warrant appointment. Resolved that Alice Prendergast, of Terrace End, be appointed junior assistant at Foxton ; Miss Henley, , pupil : teacher, be transferred from Campbell- street to Terrace End ; and that Ralph Nairn be appointed pupil teacher at Foxton. Mr Hurley moved. that in future copies of all certificates issued to teachers be kept by the Board. Mr Baker seconded, and it was carried. Mr Sanson moved that sectiou 90 be offered by tender in two pieces and sub section 2 of sec. 309, after reserving 10ft on east side, for the Board, and that the upset price of the two first sections be £100 each, and of the other section £80. Carried. A letter was received from Mr Blair, stating that, nothing had been

Mr Sanson moved, and Mr Baker seconded, that the matter be held over for the present. Carried. Mr Beckett moved the motion of which he had given notice, to rescind the present regulation re house allowance. Mr Baker had great pleasure in seconding the motion, as he considered that at present they were, instead of making their system one that recognised long service, they were doing just the reverse. The Rev. Mr Ross said he should have to support the present motion, although he should like to have seen a modification, in some points. Mr Sanson could not agree with the proposal. The present system was to his mind somewhat one-sided, as he could not see why one teacher in Wanganui should receive £40 a year and another £80, while teachers in charge of larger schools in other parts of the district only received £20. He would sooner build a six-roomed house in connection with the large schools so that the teachers could be placed on the same footing, thus not making chalk of one and cheese of another. ■Mr Bridge said his sympathies were with Mr Sanson, and yet he should support the motion. Mr Hurley said he thought the Board should pass this motion. Mr Notman quite sympathised with the motion, but if at any future time the Boord was in a position to build he should support such a proposal. On being put the motion was carried by seven to one. A letter was received from the Chairman of the Campbelltown Com* mifctee stating that it would take more than at first expected to put the building in condition, and sug* gesting that it was not fair that the contributions of the local people should be used for the purpose of repairing water-closets, &c. They should be used for the improvement of the school proper, — Mr Sanson reported the result of a visit he had paid to the school, stating that the sanitary arrangements were simply disgraceful, the accommodation being lamentably insufficient. He could not understand how it was that for 15 years the Committees had been content to allow such to exist, as he he felt sure that had the matter been put to the Board it would have been rectified. He considered that the repairs wanted would cost £60, and that the Board should give £B«'s. The Chairman would suggest that the grant be made £30- The motion was then altered to nad, c% That the money granted be expended under Mr Sanson's supervision in repairs to residence and Board's property," and on being put was carried. Letter from Mr Smith, Moutoa, acknowledging Board's courtesy in granting building for aided school. Mr Brown explained that he had given Mr Smith to understand that every provision of the Act must be complied with. An anonymous letter received, but not read or entertained.— Chronicle.
