Athletic Sports Meeting.

At the Athletic Sports meeting .held on the race course on the Queen's birthday it was found necessary, owing to the inclemency of the weather, to postpone several of the events set down lor the men, as well as the whole of the programme that had been arranged for the youngsters. As a large number of valuable prizes had been provided in a most generous way for the youthful competitors, the secretary of the Sports Committee, Mr Redmond, was instructed by his committee to arrange another day for running off the various events, and ultimately Tuesday the 20fch of this month, was fixed on as suitable for the towns-people, being the weekly half-holiday, and for the children, as being in their holiday time and therefore not interfering with the ordinary work of the school. Accordingly, the postponed meeting was held on Tuesday last in the school grounds, and was fairly weli attended. Unfortunately, the weather was again not very favourable ; but everything possible was done to make the affair a success, and most of the onlookers, as well as the competitors appeared resolved to have a good time, and had it. The onerous duties of Starter and Judge were discharged in their wonted painstaking and excellent manner by Mr H. Bradcock and Mr T. P. Williams, whilst Messrs Redmond, Rhodes. Dudson, Furrie, and others were indefatigable in giving all needed assistance throughout the afternoon, The grounds were gaily decorated with flags kindly lent for the occasion by Mr Cawston, who was also to the front in supplying quantities of lollies and other nice things for general distribution among the children. Indeed, most of the storekeepers and others who had been invited to contribute to the sports did so with such cheerfulness that there was quite a superabundance of sweets, biscuits, and such things for scrambling, etc. It is to be hoped that not many of the young folks were ill next day, but some must must have been. The following is the programme, with the names of the successful competitors in each event : — 1. Race for Boys under 16 ; 200 yards.— W Coley (12yds), 1 ; Ernest Ingram (6yds), 2 ; A. Tug-of-War for Boys.— Den Purcell's team won handsomely; but they had to pull all they knew, although the opposing team was weakened by the absence of one of their best men. This concluded the day's doings of the young folks. Immediately after the postponed events for men were run off, and were very keenly contested, the competitors in some instances giving a good deal of trouble to the starter by their over-eager- • ness. The prizes in each of the 4 events were trophies of considerable value presented by Messrs Montague, Lausdon, Bradcock and Gerbes. 1. Committee Eace, No. 1. — P. Dudson, 1; T. Redmond, 2; F.
